Chapter 7 The Boggart in the Wardrobe
Malfoy didn't reappear in classes until late on Thursday morning, when the Slytherins and Gryffindors were halfway through double Potions. He swaggered into the dungeon, his right arm covered in bandages and bound up in a sling, acting, in Harry's opinion, as though he were the heroic survivor of some dreadful battle. ââ¬Å"How is it, Draco?â⬠simpered Pansy Parkinson. ââ¬Å"Does it hurt much?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah,â⬠said Malfoy, putting on a brave sort of grimace. But Harry saw him wink at Crabbe and Goyle when Pansy had looked away. ââ¬Å"Settle down, settle down,â⬠said Professor Snape idly. Harry and Ron scowled at each other; Snape wouldn't have said ââ¬Ësettle down' if they'd walked in late, he'd have given them detention. But Malfoy had always been able to get away with anything in Snape's classes; Snape was head of Slytherin House, and generally favored his own students above all others. They were making a new potion today, a Shrinking Solution. Malfoy set up his cauldron right next to Harry and Ron, so that they were preparing their ingredients on the same table. ââ¬Å"Sir,â⬠Malfoy called, ââ¬Å"sir, I'll need help cutting up these daisy roots, because of my arm ââ¬âââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Weasley, cut up Malfoy's roots for him,â⬠said Snape without looking up. Ron went brick red. ââ¬Å"There's nothing wrong with your arm,â⬠he hissed at Malfoy. Malfoy smirked across the table. ââ¬Å"Weasley, you heard Professor Snape; cut up these roots.â⬠Ron seized his knife, pulled Malfoy's roots toward him, and began to chop them roughly, so that they were all different sizes. ââ¬Å"Professor,â⬠drawled Malfoy, ââ¬Å"Weasley's mutilating my roots, sir.â⬠Snape approached their table, stared down his hooked nose at the roots, then gave Ron an unpleasant smile from beneath his long, greasy black hair. ââ¬Å"Change roots with Malfoy, Weasley.â⬠ââ¬Å"But, sir ââ¬â!â⬠Ron had spent the last quarter of an hour carefully shredding his own roots into exactly equal pieces. ââ¬Å"Now,â⬠said Snape in his most dangerous voice. Ron shoved his own beautifully cut roots across the table at Malfoy, then took up the knife again. ââ¬Å"And, sir, I'll need this shrivelfig skinned,â⬠said Malfoy, his voice full of malicious laughter. ââ¬Å"Potter, you can skin Malfoy's shrivelfig,â⬠said Snape, giving Harry the look of loathing he always reserved just for him. Harry took Malfoy's shrivelfig as Ron began trying to repair the damage to the roots he now had to use. Harry skinned the shrivelfig as fast as he could and flung it back across the table at Malfoy without speaking. Malfoy was smirking more broadly than ever. ââ¬Å"Seen your pal Hagrid lately?â⬠he asked them quietly. ââ¬Å"None of your business,â⬠said Ron jerkily, without looking up. ââ¬Å"I'm afraid he won't be a teacher much longer,â⬠said Malfoy in a tone of mock sorrow. ââ¬Å"Father's not very happy about my injury ââ¬âââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"Keep talking, Malfoy, and I'll give you a real injury,â⬠snarled Ron. ââ¬Å"?C he's complained to the school governors. And to the Ministry of Magic. Father's got a lot of influence, you know. And a lasting injury like thisâ⬠ââ¬â he gave a huge, fake sigh ââ¬â ââ¬Å"who knows if my arm'll ever be the same again?â⬠ââ¬Å"So that's why you're putting it on,â⬠said Harry, accidentally beheading a dead caterpillar because his hand was shaking in anger, ââ¬Å"To try to get Hagrid fired.â⬠ââ¬Å"Well,â⬠said Malfoy, lowering his voice to a whisper, ââ¬Å"partly, Potter. But there are other benefits too. Weasley, slice my caterpillars for me.â⬠A few cauldrons away, Neville was in trouble. Neville regularly went to pieces in Potions lessons; it was his worst subject, and his great fear of Professor Snape made things ten times worse. His potion, which was supposed to be a bright, acid green, had turned ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Orange, Longbottom,â⬠said Snape, ladling some up and allowing to splash back into the cauldron, so that everyone could see. ââ¬Å"Orange. Tell me, boy, does anything penetrate that thick skull of yours? Didn't you hear me say, quite clearly, that only one cat spleen was needed? Didn't I state plainly that a dash of leech juice would suffice? What do I have to do to make you understand, Longbottom?â⬠Neville was pink and trembling. He looked as though he was on the verge of tears. ââ¬Å"Please, sir,â⬠said Hermione, ââ¬Å"please, I could help Neville put it right ââ¬âââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I don't remember asking you to show off, Miss Granger,â⬠said Snape coldly, and Hermione went as pink as Neville. ââ¬Å"Longbottom, at the end of this lesson we will feed a few drops of this potion to your toad and see what happens. Perhaps that will encourage you to do it properly.â⬠Snape moved away, leaving Neville breathless with fear. ââ¬Å"Help me!â⬠he moaned to Hermione. ââ¬Å"Hey, Harry,â⬠said Seamus Finnigan, leaning over to borrow Harry's brass scales, ââ¬Å"have you heard? Daily Prophet this morning ââ¬â they reckon Sirius Black's been sighted.â⬠ââ¬Å"Where?â⬠said Harry and Ron quickly. On the other side of the table, Malfoy looked up, listening closely. ââ¬Å"Not too far from here,â⬠said Seamus, who looked excited. ââ¬Å"It was a Muggle who saw him. ââ¬ËCourse, she didn't really understand. The Muggles think he's just an ordinary criminal, don't they? So she phoned the telephone hot line. By the time the Ministry of Magic got there, he was gone.â⬠ââ¬Å"Not too far from here â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Ron repeated, looking significantly at Harry. He turned around and saw Malfoy watching closely. ââ¬Å"What, Malfoy? Need something else skinned?â⬠But Malfoy's eyes were shining malevolently, and they were fixed Harry. He leaned across the table. ââ¬Å"Thinking of trying to catch Black single-handed, Potter?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yeah, that's right,â⬠said Harry offhandedly. Malfoy's thin mouth was curving in a mean smile. ââ¬Å"Of course, if it was me,â⬠he said quietly, ââ¬Å"I'd have done something before now. I wouldn't be staying in school like a good boy, I'd be out there looking for him.â⬠ââ¬Å"What are you talking about, Malfoy?â⬠said Ron roughly. ââ¬Å"Don't you know, Potter?â⬠breathed Malfoy, his pale eyes narrowed. ââ¬Å"Know what?â⬠Malfoy let out a low, sneering laugh. ââ¬Å"Maybe you'd rather not risk your neck,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Want to leave it to the Dementors, do you? But if it was me, I'd want revenge. I'd hunt him down myself.â⬠ââ¬Å"What are you talking about?â⬠said Harry angrily, but at that moment Snape called, ââ¬Å"You should have finished adding your ingredients by now; this potion needs to stew before it can be drunk, so clear away while it simmers and then we'll test Longbottom'sâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ Crabbe and Goyle laughed openly, watching Neville sweat as he stirred his potion feverishly. Hermione was muttering instructions to him out of the corner of her mouth, so that Snape wouldn't see. Harry and Ron packed away their unused ingredients and went to wash their hands and ladles in the stone basin in the corner. ââ¬Å"What did Malfoy mean?â⬠Harry muttered to Ron as he stuck his hands under the icy jet that poured from the gargoyle's mouth ââ¬Å"Why would I want revenge on Black? He hasn't done anything to me ââ¬â yet.â⬠ââ¬Å"He's making it up,â⬠said Ron savagely. ââ¬Å"He's trying to make you do something stupidâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The end of the lesson in sight, Snape strode over to Neville, who was cowering by his cauldron. ââ¬Å"Everyone gather 'round,â⬠said Snape, his black eyes glittering, ââ¬Å"and watch what happens to Longbottom's toad. If he has managed to produce a Shrinking Solution, it will shrink to a tadpole. If, as I don't doubt, he has done it wrong, his toad is likely to be poisoned.â⬠The Gryffindors watched fearfully. The Slytherins looked excited. Snape picked up Trevor the toad in his left hand and dipped a small spoon into Neville's potion, which was now green. He trickled a few drops down Trevor's throat. There was a moment of hushed silence, in which Trevor gulped; then there was a small pop, and Trevor the tadpole was wriggling in Snape's palm. The Gryffindors burst into applause. Snape, looking sour, pulled a small bottle from the pocket of his robe, poured a few drops on top of Trevor, and he reappeared suddenly, fully grown. ââ¬Å"Five points from Gryffindor,â⬠said Snape, which wiped the smiles from every face. ââ¬Å"I told you not to help him, Miss Granger. Class dismissed.â⬠Harry, Ron, and Hermione climbed the steps to the entrance hall. Harry was still thinking about what Malfoy had said, while Ron was seething about Snape. ââ¬Å"Five points from Gryffindor because the potion was all right! Why didn't you lie, Hermione? You should've said Neville did it all by himself!â⬠Hermione didn't answer. Ron looked around. ââ¬Å"Where is she?â⬠Harry turned too. They were at the top of the steps now, watching the rest of the class pass them, heading for the Great Hall and lunch. ââ¬Å"She was right behind us,â⬠said Ron, frowning. Malfoy passed them, walking between Crabbe and Goyle. He smirked at Harry and disappeared. ââ¬Å"There she is,â⬠said Harry. Hermione was panting slightly, hurrying up the stairs; one hand clutched her bag, the other seemed to be tucking something down the front of her robes. ââ¬Å"How did you do that?â⬠said Ron. ââ¬Å"What?â⬠said Hermione, joining them. ââ¬Å"One minute you were right behind us, the next moment, you were back at the bottom of the stairs again.â⬠ââ¬Å"What?â⬠Hermione looked slightly confused. ââ¬Å"Oh ââ¬â I had to go back for something. Oh no ââ¬âââ¬Å" A seam had split on Hermione's bag. Harry wasn't surprised; he could see that it was crammed with at least a dozen large and heavy books. ââ¬Å"Why are you carrying all these around with you?â⬠Ron asked her. ââ¬Å"You know how many subjects I'm taking,â⬠said Hermione breathlessly. ââ¬Å"Couldn't hold these for me, could you?â⬠ââ¬Å"But ââ¬ââ⬠Ron was turning over the books she had handed him, looking at the covers. ââ¬Å"You haven't got any of these subjects today. It's only Defense Against the Dark Arts this afternoon.â⬠ââ¬Å"Oh yes,â⬠said Hermione vaguely, but she packed all the books back into her bag just the same. ââ¬Å"I hope there's something good for lunch, I'm starving,â⬠she added, and she marched off toward the Great Hall. ââ¬Å"D'you get the feeling Hermione's not telling us something?â⬠Ron asked Harry. ****** Professor Lupin wasn't there when they arrived at his first Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson. They all sat down, took out their books, quills, and parchment, and were talking when he finally entered the room. Lupin smiled vaguely and placed his tatty old briefcase on the teacher's desk. He was as shabby as ever but looked healthier than he had on the train, as though he had had a few square meals. ââ¬Å"Good afternoon,â⬠he said. ââ¬Å"Would you please put all your books back in your bags. Today's will be a practical lesson. You will need only your wands.â⬠A few curious looks were exchanged as the class put away their books. They had never had a practical Defense Against the Dark Arts class before, unless you counted the memorable class last year when their old teacher had brought a cageful of pixies to class and set them loose. ââ¬Å"Right then,â⬠said Professor Lupin, when everyone was ready. ââ¬Å"If you'd follow me.â⬠Puzzled but interested, the class got to its feet and followed Professor Lupin out of the classroom. He led them along the deserted corridor and around a corner, where the first thing they saw was Peeves the Poltergeist, who was floating upside down in midair and stuffing the nearest keyhole with chewing gum. Peeves didn't look up until Professor Lupin was two feet away; then he wiggled his curly-toed feet and broke into song. ââ¬Å"Loony, loopy Lupin,â⬠Peeves sang. ââ¬Å"Loony, loopy Lupin, loony, loopy Lupin ââ¬âââ¬Å" Rude and unmanageable as he almost always was, Peeves usually showed some respect toward the teachers. Everyone looked quickly at Professor Lupin to see how he would take this; to their surprise, he was still smiling. ââ¬Å"I'd take that gum out of the keyhole if I were you, Peeves,â⬠he said pleasantly. ââ¬Å"Mr. Filch won't be able to get in to his brooms.â⬠Filch was the Hogwarts caretaker, a bad-tempered, failed wizard who waged a constant war against the students and, indeed, Peeves. However, Peeves paid no attention to Professor Lupin's words, except to blow a loud wet raspberry. Professor Lupin gave a small sigh and took out his wand. ââ¬Å"This is a useful little spell,â⬠he told the class over his shoulder. ââ¬Å"Please watch closely.â⬠He raised the wand to shoulder height, said, ââ¬Å"Waddiwasi!â⬠and pointed it at Peeves. With the force of a bullet, the wad of chewing gum shot out of the keyhole and straight down Peeves's left nostril; he whirled upright and zoomed away, cursing. ââ¬Å"Cool, sir!â⬠said Dean Thomas in amazement. ââ¬Å"Thank you, Dean,â⬠said Professor Lupin, putting his wand away again. ââ¬Å"Shall we proceed?â⬠They set off again, the class looking at shabby Professor Lupin with increased respect. He led them down a second corridor and stopped, right outside the staffroom door. ââ¬Å"Inside, please,â⬠said Professor Lupin, opening it and standing back. The staffroom, a long, paneled room full of old, mismatched chairs, was empty except for one teacher. Professor Snape was sitting in a low armchair, and he looked around as the class filed in. His eyes were glittering and there was a nasty sneer playing around his mouth. As Professor Lupin came in and made to close the door behind him, Snape said, ââ¬Å"Leave it open, Lupin. I'd rather not witness this.â⬠He got to his feet and strode past the class, his black robes billowing behind him. At the doorway he turned on his heel and said, ââ¬Å"Possibly no one's warned you, Lupin, but this class contains Neville Longbottom. I would advise you not to entrust him with anything difficult. Not unless Miss Granger is hissing instructions in his ear.â⬠Neville went scarlet. Harry glared at Snape; it was bad enough that he bullied Neville in his own classes, let alone doing it in front of other teachers. Professor Lupin had raised his eyebrows. ââ¬Å"I was hoping that Neville would assist me with the first stage of the operation,â⬠he said, ââ¬Å"and I am sure he will perform it admirably.â⬠Neville's face went, if possible, even redder. Snape's lip curled, but he left, shutting the door with a snap. ââ¬Å"Now, then,â⬠said Professor Lupin, beckoning the class toward the end of the room, where there was nothing but an old wardrobe where the teachers kept their spare robes. As Professor Lupin went to stand next to it, the wardrobe gave a sudden wobble, banging off the wall. ââ¬Å"Nothing to worry about,â⬠said Professor Lupin calmly because a few people had jumped backward in alarm. ââ¬Å"There's a Boggart in there.â⬠Most people seemed to feel that this was something to worry about. Neville gave Professor Lupin a look of pure terror, and Seamus Finnigan eyed the now rattling doorknob apprehensively. ââ¬Å"Boggarts like dark, enclosed spaces,â⬠said Professor Lupin. ââ¬Å"Wardrobes, the gap beneath beds, the cupboards under sinks ââ¬â I've even met one that had lodged itself in a grandfather clock. This one moved in yesterday afternoon, and I asked the headmaster if the staff would leave it to give my third years some practice.â⬠ââ¬Å"So, the first question we must ask ourselves is, what is a Boggart?â⬠Hermione put up her hand. ââ¬Å"It's a shape-shifter,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"It can take the shape of whatever it thinks will frighten us most.â⬠ââ¬Å"Couldn't have put it better myself,â⬠said Professor Lupin, and Hermione glowed. ââ¬Å"So the Boggart sitting in the darkness within has not yet assumed a form. He does not yet know what will frighten the person on the other side of the door. Nobody knows what a Boggart looks like when he is alone, but when I let him out, he will immediately become whatever each of us most fears. ââ¬Å"This means,â⬠said Professor Lupin, choosing to ignore Neville's small sputter of terror, ââ¬Å"that we have a huge advantage over the Boggart before we begin. Have you spotted it, Harry?â⬠Trying to answer a question with Hermione next to him, bobbing up and down on the balls of her feet with her hand in the air, was very off-putting, but Harry had a go. ââ¬Å"Er ââ¬â because there are so many of us, it won't know what shape it should be?â⬠ââ¬Å"Precisely,â⬠said Professor Lupin, and Hermione put her hand down, looking a little disappointed. ââ¬Å"It's always best to have company when you're dealing with a Boggart. He becomes confused. Which should he become, a headless corpse or a flesh-eating slug? I once saw a Boggart make that very mistake ââ¬â tried to frighten two people at once and turned himself into half a slug. Not remotely frightening. ââ¬ËThe charm that repels a Boggart is simple, yet it requires force of mind. You see, the thing that really finishes a Boggart is laughter. What you need to do is force it to assume a shape that you find amusing. ââ¬Å"We will practice the charm without wands first. After me, pleaseâ⬠¦riddikulus!â⬠ââ¬Å"Riddikulus!â⬠said the class together. ââ¬Å"Good,â⬠said Professor Lupin. ââ¬Å"Very good. But that was the easy part, I'm afraid. You see, the word alone is not enough. And this is where you come in, Neville.â⬠The wardrobe shook again, though not as much as Neville, who walked forward as though he were heading for the gallows. ââ¬Å"Right, Neville,â⬠said Professor Lupin. ââ¬Å"First things first: what would you say is the thing that frightens you most in the world?â⬠Neville's lips moved, but no noise came out. ââ¬Å"I didn't catch that, Neville, sorry,â⬠said Professor Lupin cheerfully. Neville looked around rather wildly, as though begging someone to help him, then said, in barely more than a whisper, ââ¬Å"Professor Snape.â⬠Nearly everyone laughed. Even Neville grinned apologetically. Professor Lupin, however, looked thoughtful. ââ¬Å"Professor Snapeâ⬠¦hmmmâ⬠¦Neville, I believe you live with your grandmother?â⬠ââ¬Å"Er ââ¬â yes,â⬠said Neville nervously. ââ¬Å"But ââ¬â I don't want the Boggart to turn into her either.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, no, you misunderstand me,â⬠said Professor Lupin, now smiling. ââ¬Å"I wonder, could you tell us what sort of clothes your grandmother usually wears?â⬠Neville looked startled, but said, ââ¬Å"Wellâ⬠¦always the same hat. A tall one with a stuffed vulture on top. And a long dressâ⬠¦green, normallyâ⬠¦and sometimes a fox-fur scarf.â⬠ââ¬Å"And a handbag?â⬠prompted Professor Lupin. ââ¬Å"A big red one,â⬠said Neville. ââ¬Å"Right then,â⬠said Professor Lupin. ââ¬Å"Can you picture those clothes very clearly, Neville? Can you see them in your mind's eye?â⬠ââ¬Å"Yes,â⬠said Neville uncertainty, plainly wondering what was coming next. ââ¬Å"When the Boggart bursts out of this wardrobe, Neville, and sees you, it will assume the form of Professor Snape,â⬠said Lupin. ââ¬Å"And you will raise your wand ââ¬â thus ââ¬â and cry ââ¬Å"Riddikulusâ⬠ââ¬â and concentrate hard on your grandmother's clothes. If all goes well, Professor Boggart Snape will be forced into that vulture-topped hat, and that green dress, with that big red handbag.â⬠There was a great shout of laughter. The wardrobe wobbled more violently. ââ¬Å"If Neville is successful, the Boggart is likely to shift his attention to each of us in turn,â⬠said Professor Lupin. ââ¬Å"I would like all of you to take a moment now to think of the thing that scares you most, and imagine how you might force it to look comicalâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ The room went quiet. Harry thoughtâ⬠¦What scared him most in the world? His first thought was Lord Voldemort ââ¬â a Voldemort returned to full strength. But before he had even started to plan a possible counterattack on a Boggart-Voldemort, a horrible image came floating to the surface of his mindâ⬠¦. A rotting, glistening hand, slithering back beneath a black cloakâ⬠¦a long, rattling breath from an unseen mouthâ⬠¦then a cold so penetrating it felt like drowningâ⬠¦ Harry shivered, then looked around, hoping no one had noticed. Many people had their eyes shut tight. Ron was muttering to himself, ââ¬Å"Take its legs off.â⬠Harry was sure he knew what that was about. Ron's greatest fear was spiders. ââ¬Å"Everyone ready?â⬠said Professor Lupin. Harry felt a lurch of fear. He wasn't ready. How could you make a Dementor less frightening? But he didn't want to ask for more time; everyone else was nodding and rolling up their sleeves. ââ¬Å"Neville, we're going to back away,â⬠said Professor Lupin. ââ¬Å"Let you have a clear field, all right? I'll call the next person forwardâ⬠¦Everyone back, now, so Neville can get a clear shot ââ¬âââ¬Å" They all retreated, backed against the walls, leaving Neville alone beside the wardrobe. He looked pale and frightened, but he had pushed up the sleeves of his robes and was holding his wand ready. ââ¬Å"On the count of three, Neville,â⬠said Professor Lupin, who was pointing his own wand at the handle of the wardrobe. ââ¬Å"One ââ¬â two ââ¬â three ââ¬â now!â⬠A jet of sparks shot from the end of Professor Lupin's wand and hit the doorknob. The wardrobe burst open. Hook-nosed and menacing, Professor Snape stepped out, his eyes flashing at Neville. Neville backed away, his wand up, mouthing wordlessly. Snape was bearing down upon him, reaching inside his robes. ââ¬Å"R ââ¬â r ââ¬â riddikulus! â⬠squeaked Neville. There was a noise like a whip crack. Snape stumbled; he was wearing a long, lace-trimmed dress and a towering hat topped with a moth-eaten vulture, and he was swinging a huge crimson handbag. There was a roar of laughter; the Boggart paused, confused, and Professor Lupin shouted, ââ¬Å"Parvati! Forward!â⬠Parvati walked forward, her face set. Snape rounded on her. There was another crack, and where he had stood was a bloodstained, bandaged mummy; its sightless face was turned to Parvati and it began to walk toward her very slowly, dragging its feet, its stiff arms rising ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Riddikulus!â⬠cried Parvati. A bandage unraveled at the mummy's feet; it became entangled, fell face forward, and its head rolled off. ââ¬Å"Seamus!â⬠roared Professor Lupin. Seamus darted past Parvati. Crack! Where the mummy had been was a woman with floorlength black hair and a skeletal, green-tinged face ââ¬â a banshee. She opened her mouth wide and an unearthly sound filled the room, a long, wailing shriek that made the hair on Harry's head stand on end ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Riddikulus!â⬠shouted Seamus. The banshee made a rasping noise and clutched her throat; her voice was gone. Crack! The banshee turned into a rat, which chased its tail in a circle, then ââ¬â crack!- became a rattlesnake, which slithered and writhed before ââ¬â crack! ââ¬â becoming a single, bloody eyeball. ââ¬Å"It's confused!â⬠shouted Lupin. ââ¬Å"We're getting there! Dean!â⬠Dean hurried forward. Crack! The eyeball became a severed hand, which flipped over and began to creep along the floor like a crab. ââ¬Å"Riddikulus!â⬠yelled Dean. There was a snap, and the hand was trapped in a mousetrap. ââ¬Å"Excellent! Ron, you next!â⬠Ron leapt forward. Crack! Quite a few people screamed. A giant spider, six feet tall and covered in hair, was advancing on Ron, clicking its pincers menacingly. For a moment, Harry thought Ron had frozen. Then ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Riddikulus!â⬠bellowed Ron, and the spider's legs vanished; it rolled over and over; Lavender Brown squealed and ran out of its way and it came to a halt at Harry's feet. He raised his wand, ready, but ââ¬â ââ¬Å"Here!â⬠shouted Professor Lupin suddenly, hurrying forward. Crack! The legless spider had vanished. For a second, everyone looked wildly around to see where it was. Then they saw a silvery-white orb hanging in the air in front of Lupin, who said, ââ¬Å"Riddikulus!â⬠almost lazily. Crack! ââ¬Å"Forward, Neville, and finish him off!â⬠said Lupin as the Boggart landed on the floor as a cockroach. Crack! Snape was back. Belonging: Overseas Chinese and Leah Essay
Belonging is a natural human instinct of how we define ourselves in the world we are living in. Our belonging to or connections with people, places and groups enable us to develop an unique characteristics in our personalities. Our perception of belonging is influenced by the personal, cultural, historical and social context of our surroundings. Identity, community, societyââ¬â¢s attitude, relationships and culture are aspects of belonging that contribute to broaden or deepen our sense of Belonging or Not Belonging. The sense of not belonging felt by individual can be evolved to become a sense of belonging by factors of the aspects of belonging through experiencing physical or inner journey and vice versa. Identity is defined as the distinct characteristics of an individual possessed by which a person is recognized or known as. Individual who possesses a strong and unique personal or cultural identity will intensify their sense of belonging or not belonging. In the novel, the China Coin, by Allan Baillie, explores how personal and cultural identity of the protagonist, Leah Waters, could be changed from alienation of not belonging to acceptance of belonging by experiencing physical and inner journeys. In the beginning of the novel, Leah senses alienation and distanced toward China as she identify herself as an Australian instead of a Chinese. The monologue from Leahââ¬â¢s mind, ââ¬ËCouldnââ¬â¢t the woman see? She was not Chinese, not even an ABC ââ¬â Australian born Chinese. Joan was Chinese, but Dad, David Waters, had been English. Didnââ¬â¢t it show? ââ¬â¢ suggested that Leah identify herself that she does not belong as a Chinese. A similar situation is also described in the film Avatar, directed by James Cameron, when the protagonist, Jake Sully, who was a disabled person that chosen for a mining operation in a distanced planet. Jake said, ââ¬Ëso, here I amâ⬠¦ they offer me the gig because I could link with the avatar which is insanely expensiveââ¬â¢. This reveal that Jake felt isolated and discriminated in the same sense as Leah towards China. The sense of not belonging will create a barrier that further prevents the willingness to belong in a new area. Leahââ¬â¢s sense of identity however gradually changed from not belonging to belonging, as it is shown in her monologue ââ¬Å"No, youââ¬â¢re not Chinese, but youââ¬â¢re not not Chinese,â⬠this suggested that Leah has recognized her identity as a Chinese and is willing to accept her multicultural identity. Relationship is the critical factor that can escalate the sense of belonging as it allows interaction between people which will increase their communication which in turns increase their understanding and this lead to an increase in the sense of belonging. In ââ¬Å"China Coinâ⬠, the half ancient Chinese coin represents a separated relationship to Leah and Joanââ¬â¢s family. Throughout their journey, Leah and Joan expanded their relationship with the Ji family. Leah in particular changed her sense of belonging during her interaction with Swallow. Swallow said, ââ¬Å"itââ¬â¢s all right, now you got a sister,â⬠and Leah relied, ââ¬Å"You? Yeah, thanks kid. â⬠This suggested that relationship grew between Leah and Swallow through their conversation and this strengthen Leahââ¬â¢s sense of belonging. When Leah and Joan left the Good Field village, Leah said, ââ¬Å"Will we ever see them again? â⬠and ââ¬Å"Yes. Weââ¬â¢re family,â⬠shows that this is a milestone where Leah as she sense belonging when she relate herself to the Ji family as her own family. Community acceptance and Societyââ¬â¢s attitude are important factor which correspond to each other which magnify the sense of belonging. Community acceptance is being welcomed to be part of a family or group and societyââ¬â¢s attitudes are the believes sees by individual. Community acceptance towards Leah and Joan is shown when they found the Good Field village. ââ¬Å"Grandfather â⬠¦ wrapped his arms about Joan. ââ¬ËWelcome back, Sister. ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ This is a touching scene that demonstrates Chinese community is welcoming towards their relatives which escalate their sense of belonging. A further example of community acceptance is when Joan had an accident and Leah was left alone. Ke, the son of the Zhu family, recognized Leah as a family member from the letter from Joanââ¬â¢s father and offered hospitality. ââ¬Å"Leah should stay in my familyââ¬â¢s house. She is my family. â⬠This contributes to increase Leahââ¬â¢s sense of belonging as Ke assisted her when she was helpless because of Joanââ¬â¢s accident. The discriminative society attitudes directed toward Leah and Joan as foreign Chinese, however, restricted their growth of sense of belonging. The biased comment from the women on the train, ââ¬Å"You Oversea Chinese do not know anything, just how to make money and get fat,â⬠signal and deepen the barrier to belong in a new community when discriminative attitudes rumoured. A powerful example of the combination of community acceptance and cultural understanding that highlighted the emotional sense of belonging is that Jake Sully, the protagonist in the film Avatar, chose to belong to the alien natives, the Omaticaya, to against invading human when he himself is a human because he developed his sense of belonging as he learn the culture of the Omaticaya through understanding and challenges and he realize the deceiving tricks exercised by the human. Jake was accepted in the Omaticaya community as he said in his last video log, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Iââ¬â¢m not gonna be coming backâ⬠¦I donââ¬â¢t want to be late for my own party. Itââ¬â¢s my birthday after all. This is Jake Sully signing off. â⬠The community acceptances and cultural understandings are emphasized when Jake said, ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s my birthday after allâ⬠with the conjunction monologue stating that, ââ¬Å"the Naââ¬â¢vi say, ââ¬Ëevery person is born twice, the second time is when you earned your place among the people, foreverââ¬â¢. â⬠The sense of belonging is highlighted when Jakeââ¬â¢s soul at the end was permanently transferred to his avatar via the spiritual ceremony conducted by the Omaticaya. With the use of extreme close up camera shot, it shows Jake belong to the Omaticaya community now as he opening his eye in his avatar body. In conclusion, during our lifetime, our sense of identity, the surrounding community, societyââ¬â¢s attitude, the complex interaction of relationship and our culture will alter our sense of belonging or not belonging as we would experience physical or inner journey. It is critical and essential that we understand our sense of belonging or not belonging thoroughly in order to define ourselves in the world we are living in.

The fundamental element in Smithââ¬â¢s viewpoint is his focus on the importance of the free market in ensuring the highest level of quality of commodities at the lowest prices. Smithââ¬â¢s philosophy is that human beings are naturally individualistic.He furthers political theories that emphasize the individual, and proclaims the worth of each individual. He believes that human beings will interact most effectively when they live in a society of economic freedom, with individualistic philosophies that tend to emphasize what people can do as individuals, not what they can do as groups. My understanding of knowledge and reality is that reality is limited to the point wha t we can comprehend and see on basis of our senses usage. To put it simply, if we see a beggar on the street, we conclude him to be a poor and miserable man because of his real physical appearance. However, this person can be a great thinker the same as the worst conman, but we do not know as our knowledge is limited by what we can only see on the surface. The knowledge about this man as well as about different things in the world is hidden. We can discover the knowledge only when we strive for such discovery and keep searching even at times it seems pointless. I agree with Plato that people must try to rise above their limited knowledge to learn more and to attain the highest form of knowledge. At the same time, I think that one type of knowledge can be perceived and explained differently as we have ability to compare things. There is different research method. In other words, the researcher will be using different approaches to evaluate and analyse them. In addition, the essay will discuss and critically evaluate the available resource in the subject area example by using qualitative research or quantitative research, primary and secondary research, inductive and deductive approach, positivist or phenomenological approach and ethnography. Furthermore, the researcher will justify why this approach has been taken this into consideration or chosen and not the other approaches. Firstly, the literature of this essay will define research, qualitative research, and quantitative research. Secondly, this essay will define dark tourism and validity. And finally, conclusion will be summarised. There are different definitions for research methods, quantitative research and qualitative research. According to Sekaran (1994, p. 4) quoted in Finn et al (2000, p.2) he defines research as a systematic and organised effort to investigate a specific problem that needs solution. Whilst Elias (1986, p.20) cited in Veal (2006, p. 2) argues it as The aim, as far as I can see, is the same in all science. Put simple and cursorily, the aim is to make known something previously unknown to human beings. It is to advance human knowledge, to make it more certain or better fitting The aim is discovery. Veal also Define quantitative approach as to research involves statistical analysis. It relies on numerical evidence to draw conclusions or to test hypotheses. To be sure of the reliability of the results it is often necessary to study relatively large numbers of people and to use computers to analyse the data. The data may be derived from questionnaire surveys, from observation involving counts, or from secondary sources. Adding to that, Veal also defines the qualitative approach as research is generally not concern with numbers. It involves gathering a great deal of information about a small number of people rather than a limited amount of information about large number of people. As the researcher said earlier, there are different definitions for quantitative and qualitative research, here are some other definitions form another author. Brent and Goeldner (2003, p, 487) define qualitative research as the foundation on which strong, reliable research programs are based. It is most often the first step in a research program the step designed to uncover motivation, reasons, impression, perception, and ideas that relevant individuals have about a subject of interests. Unlike more quantitative methods of research, qualitative research involves talking in depth and detail with few individuals. The goal is to develop extensive information from a few people. The author also defines quantitative as a type of research; the goal is to develop important-but limited- information from each individual and to talk with a sizable number of individuals in order to draw inferences about the population at large. The characteristic of qualitative research, on the other hand, inc ludes small samples, extensive information from each other respondent, and a search for meaning, ideas and relevant issues to quantify in later steps of the research program. Dark tourism is a different type of tourist attraction. It is the act of travel and visitation to sites of death, disaster and the seemingly macabre. Tourists flock to experience sites of past terror that offer up grim and disturbing tragedies (www.citypaper). Howie (2003, p. 325) argues that dark tourism can be define as a term coined by Lennon and Foley(2000) for tourism motivated by a desire to visit places associated with death and catastrophe such as famous assassination sites, for example where president Kennedy was shot in Dallas, Texas, or the concentration camps in Europe and Holocaust memorial in Israel. Dark tourism has been very important because is the time people remember their loves ones who has been dead through war. Tourist or visitors intend to visit the darker side of tourism from all over the world and for different reasons for example because of curiosity and maybe something they have heard before. Dark tourism includes some of the most famous places in the world to visit. It is obvious that most tourists travel because they are very interested in seeing the dark side of tourism such as the death and disaster which occurred in countries such as country France, Belgium and Germany where soldiers died in the wars. This dark tourism issue has caused a lot of discussion as to why people do this in among academics. Research in the field of dark tourism has not been very important until the early nineteen seventies; it began to spread only since that time. Marketing research is a broad concept including various techniques, but a main distinction should be made between quantitative and qualitative research methods. As said early Quantitative techniques describe variables by assigning a number representing an attitude, opinion or motivation- which can be statistically analysed. In contrast, qualitative research focuses on attitudes, opinions and motivations in the words of each respondent, but without quantifying it. Quantitative methods have always dominated in tourism, as it often appears as more reliable, since it is based on facts that can be observed, and then analysed. This paper will focus on the quantitative correlation study method used in survey based researches. Social research is a collection of methods people use to systematically combine theories and ideas to produce knowledge. Because of its complexity, researchers must be able to carefully select a method or methods that will best suit their study objectives. Quantitative research methods consist of: experiment, content analysis, existing statistics (correlation), and survey. The correlation and survey will be the two main methods that will be emphasized. In a survey research, people are asked questions either through the use of questionnaires or during an interview. Unlike the experiment approach, the condition and situation in a survey requires no manipulation. All the subjects have to do is to answer questions. Good quantitative research is determined by validity and reliability of the research method used. Quantitative research is a technique for comparing relationship between time, weight, size and performance. The purpose of quantitative market research is to have an increased understanding of the product First Fruit. This research is numerically oriented and requires attention of consumers as well. For example an insurance company may ask its customers to rate its overall service as excellent, good, poor, very poor. Quantitative data consist of numbers representing counts or measurements (e.g., height, weights, salaries, etc.). Quantitative data can be further divided into discrete data or continuous data. Discrete data result from either a finite number of possible values or a countable number of possible values. Continuous data result from infinitely many possible values that can be associated with points on a continuous scale in such a way that there are no gaps are interruptions. However, qualitative techniques have become to be more commonly used for the last decade. Each technique has obviously specific advantages and drawbacks; that is why it is necessary to examine both in different contexts, especially in tourism research. As Alf H. Walle reported in his report called Quantitative versus Qualitative Research in Tourism, plurality of equally valid research strategies exist within tourism. Choice must be thus determined according to the situation in which the research takes place. Grounded Theory is still very relevant today as it is the main form of rigorous and rule-governed qualitative methods. Even if it attempts to maintain positivist rigor, a high degree of Modernism can be reached through this technique. As both quantitative and qualitative research methods have advantages and drawbacks. To evaluate this problem and overcome the limitations, the principal solution appears to be the use of both methods in the same time, according to the situation. As Miller and Crabtree pointed out, different levels of intensity can be reached in tourism research, this intensity being defined as the degree to which qualitative methods are associated with quantitative methods. The canonical correlation analysis is based on the same principle, but it uses multiple dependent variables, thus enlarging the scope of research. However, both methods have the same limitations: omitted variables may be correlated with existing ones, and the environmental conditions are likely to change. On the other hand, factor analysis and collecting analysis are two other important quantitative techniques that can be useful for tourism research methods. Factor analysiss goal is to identify the underlying dimension in data and to reduce the number of variables by eliminating redundancy. Validity also helps produce the desire result the researcher is looking for. Validity can define as the extent to which the information collected by the researcher truly reflects the phenomenon being studied veal (2006, p.41). In tourism research there are different approaches targeting the audience when researching. The primary sources of these methods have largely come from sociology and anthrop ology. Since that time, qualitative techniques have developed, but the sharpest rise in qualitative publications has really occurred in the nineteen eighties, the main reason for that being that figures cant explain all the situations, especially in a field such as tourism. Besides, decision behaviours are always depending on two main elements that should not be forgotten: firstly, task factors include the number of alternative and attributes, time pressure, response mode and information format. Secondly, Context factors refer to the similarity of the options in a choice, the quality of the choice set, as well as reference points and framing. This report also considers qualitative techniques as inadequate because of the extra time, effort and skill required; besides the model tested may in this case be incompletely or inadequately specified. Most researchers use different approaches of researching as has been said before, for example a focus group. Using a focus group also help analyse what the research is about and also gives broad ideas of another audience. Additionally, it also helps identify what people want and love to do in a tourism organisation. Researchers conduct focus group so that they can know the perception of their opinion, attitude or be haviours towards something. Focus group is a unique method of qualitative research in discussing issues with group of people. According to lia (2003, p.1) a focus group is defined as a small structured group with selected participant, normally led by a moderator. They are set up in other groups to explore specific topic, and individual views and experiences through group interaction a focus group is intended to be a collection of data from audience and also having individual interviews for example face to face interviews. On the other hand, a focus group has a limitation of analysing a topic. A Focus group can very be difficult in terms of gathering all the information taken from a target audience. As Monique (2007, p. 10) argues that despite popular belief, focus group research is not a cheap and quick exercise; it requires a great of preparation, organisation, and time to collect, manage and analyse and the data. The sample size is usually small, and there is a large use of non-pr obability sampling methods, meaning that results cant be generalized to the whole population, they are just reliable for the sample concerned. Descriptive methods summarize some aspects of the environment, they only describe but without looking for the cause and effect of relationships. Surveys with questionnaires are the main way to collect data, they can be achieved face-to-face or by indirect means such as mail, phone, fax or the Internet. This usually takes a long time, but a large sample can be used easily. Finally, causal research establishes a cause-effect link between variables. In each case, the main strength of projective techniques is that respondents are more willing to give answers that they wouldnt have given if they knew the purpose of the study, especially when the subject is personal or difficult. Whats more, it can reveal motivations or attitudes at a subconscious level. Yet, these methods require highly trained interviewers and skilled interpreters, as they are open ended techniques that can thus be difficult to interpret. Finally, other qualitative methods can be used to explain the reasons and motivations underlying in peoples decisions. Moreover, there are different ways of research in terms of academic working. Researcher mostly use the following ways, referencing usually when we paraphrase or summarize someone else opinion. Books, journals, video, personal interview, emails and many more are some of the sources that researchers use. Qualitative research can be used to enhance quantitative work. Finally, in qualitative research it can lead to theological sampling. As quoted from (Manson 1996:93-4) in Long (2007, p.42) said, theoretical sampling means selecting groups or categories to study on the à ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦basis of their relevance to your question , your theoretical positionà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦and most importantly the explanation or account which you are developingà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦[using] criteria which help to develop and test your theory and explanation. The researcher is going to identify some side effect or complication of secondary research. According to veal (2006, p.148) he argues that are advantage and disadv antage of using secondary data to analyse research. Some of the advantages can be, timing- data maybe instantly available, cost of collecting new data avoided and disadvantages can be secondary data that has been designed for another purpose so it may be not be ideal for the current project.
